Debunking Common Dance Myths at Flying Dance

We’ve all heard them—those sneaky dance myths that creep in, making people believe that dance is something only for the young, the talented, or the ultra-flexible. But we’re here to tell you: that couldn’t be further from the truth! Let’s take a moment to clear the air, break a few myths, and welcome EVERYONE to the dance floor. Whether you’re here to learn Salsa, Bachata, or simply want to connect with others, this is your invitation to let go of doubts and start grooving!

So, get comfy, let’s hang out for a bit, maybe grab a coffee, and let’s get to myth-busting!

Myth #1: "You Have to Start Dancing When You’re Young"

The Myth: You missed the boat if you didn’t start dancing at age 5.

The Truth: Nonsense! Dancing isn’t a race to stardom—it’s about enjoying the journey. Many of our students started dancing well into their 30s, 40s, and even 70s. I personally attended my 1st partner dance when I was 28 years old.

Learning as an adult actually has its perks. You bring focus, discipline, and life experience that can help you catch on faster. Plus, partner dances like Salsa are all about rhythm and connection—and neither of those has an age limit.

So, whether you’re 25 or 75, you’re right on time to start dancing.

Takeaway: No expiration date on dance dreams—come join us! Your first Salsa step could be your best yet.

Myth #2: "You Need a Natural Talent to Dance Well"

The Myth: Either you’ve got it or you don’t.

The Truth: Talent is overrated. Seriously. What matters most is practice, perseverance, and a good sense of humor. (Yes, laughing at yourself when you mess up is key!). Why do you think we Salsa dancers are always laughing? we are messing up all the time.

Dancing isn’t magic—it’s a skill, and like any skill, it gets better with time. Our instructors have seen complete beginners transform into confident social dancers by showing up, working hard, and having fun.

So, if you can clap to a beat or tap your foot when your favorite song plays, you’ve got all the talent you need. The rest? We’ll help you with that!

Takeaway: You don’t need to be a natural. Just bring a willingness to learn, and we’ll do the rest.

Myth #3: "Dancing Is Only for the Fit and Flexible"

The Myth: You need to do yoga-worthy backbends or have Olympic-level endurance to dance.

The Truth: Flexibility and fitness are not prerequisites—they’re benefits! Dance is one of the most inclusive activities out there. It doesn’t matter if you can’t touch your toes or run a mile without breaking a sweat. Partner dances like Salsa focus on rhythm, coordination, and social connection, not acrobatics.

Dancing actually improves your flexibility, balance, and stamina over time. Whether you’re taking it slow or diving in full throttle, you’ll be amazed by how your body adapts and thrives.

Takeaway: Don’t wait to get fit to dance—dance to get fit and have fun along the way.
Did you know: Despite the many years of teaching and performing in dance, I, Nico, can not touch my toes.

Dance Quote: "In Salsa, we don’t find partners—we create connections."

Myth #4: "You Need a Partner to Learn Partner Dances"

The Myth: No partner, no dance.

The Truth: You don’t need a partner—we’ve got you covered! Many of our classes are designed to pair people up and rotate partners, so you’ll never feel left out. Even without a partner, you can still learn the steps, rhythm, and movement on your own. Solo practice is actually a great way to build confidence before dancing with someone else.

And here’s the best part: You’ll meet tons of friendly faces along the way, making it easy to connect with future dance partners.

Takeaway: Just show up—we’ll handle the partnering magic.

Myth #5: "Dance Is Just for Performances"

The Myth: If you’re not planning to be on stage, why dance?

The Truth: Not every dancer wants the spotlight, and that’s perfectly okay. Dance is just as valuable for socializing, relieving stress, and connecting with others. Our Salsa and Bachata classes are designed to foster a sense of community. Think of it as a social gathering where you happen to be moving to some amazing music.

We host social nights, casual meetups, and fun practice sessions where performance pressure doesn’t exist—just pure joy and connection.

Takeaway: No spotlight necessary. Dance for fun, friends, and feel-good vibes.
