Can Dance Change Your Life?

I recently had the privilege of being interviewed by a reporter from Guelph Today, as part of their annual “Acts of Kindness” campaign—a wonderful initiative that highlights key community members. I'm honored to have been nominated for this recognition by one of our dedicated students.

The first question posed to me was quite confusing: "How important is dancing to you?" [pause…] [hmmmmm…..].

Well, to me, dancing is important because it is my job, it pays my bills, it keeps me out of trouble, it's my daily/weekly dose of joy and health, despite my slight indulgence in pastries—don’t tell anyone! It’s fulfilling, and more importantly, it’s a vital source of mental wellness in these challenging times.

She was not satisfied with my answer. I waited …… She probed deeper, reflecting on a statement from the student who nominated me: "Being part of the Flying Dance Community and attending your classes has changed her life." She asked, "How does it feel knowing that what you do can have such an impact on someone’s life?" Indeed! Heavy! What does one say?

Well, that article came out today, I hope I did justice to the the question.

Many many years ago, a student-turned-friend confided that being part of our community had transformed their life. I was skeptical, but accepted the compliment. Hey, look, I teach Salsa dancing, what’s so important about that? I was born in Kenya, and trust me, if I told my dad I was moving to Canada to teach Salsa dancing, and not go to university and be a lawyer or something in that line of work, he would have not allowed me to come to this country. Teach Salsa? What is Salsa?

Another of my dance-student-to-friend people told me dance did change their life. Then another, then another, and as the private messages kept coming, year after year, I too started believing that dance really does have the power to change someone’s life.

What is the Flying Dance Communities magic touch? We love dancing. And we love to dance with everyone, from any age group, from any background, beginner or advanced dancers. We accept you for who you are. We enjoy dancing with you at your level of comfort in dance, and in life. We are a harbor of good positive energy that helps you rejuvenate, a stress-free happy place for many people.

As we mark our 20th anniversary of sharing this dance magic, I encourage you to share your love of dance with one or two people important in your life who don’t dance. If they’re not near Guelph, help them find a local community. Research, read reviews, and encourage them to embrace this transformative art.

For those within a 25-minute drive of Guelph—or 30 minutes considering traffic—May is now officially Flying Dance Community's Birthday Month. We have an exciting lineup of dance events planned. Thank you for your enduring support over the years.
