💃 From Shy to Shining: Alex's Story! 🕺

Meet Alex (not his real name). In his late 20s, Alex always loved music but felt dancing was "not for guys like me." A work friend brought him to our Friday Night Salsa Fix (FNSF) events whereby he spend the entire evening standing by the wall, watching the people get on and off the dance floor song after song. He was literally glued to the wall that 1st evening, and every other Friday for a few months. The young man did not move!

"I had two left feet and zero confidence," I remember Alex saying.

So I decided to give him a job. In those days, I taught the drop in lessons, DJayed for the evening, and manned the door. I asked Alex to help out at the door, while I focused on the music and dancing. He got to meet our regular wonderful dancers every week, and new dancers like himself who wanted to try out dance for the 1st time. One day, Alex mustered the courage to join a beginner class at Flying Dance. Though his heart pounded with nervousness, something amazing happened: the warm smiles and encouragement from classmates melted his fear. With each class, Alex opened up more—laughing at mistakes, high-fiving others, and feeling the music take over.

Over the many months and years Alex spent dancing with us, he found himself achieving more than any of us would have foreseen; performing in our community showcase FDFest, developed a love of music to the point of DJing at our events, and find the love of his life - then starting a family together. Looking back , I would honestly say that not only did he have fun, but he discovered a confident side of himself he never knew existed.

Alex's story reminds us that the hardest step is simply saying yes. Once you do, the transformation begins. ✨

Beyond the Steps: Benefits of Performing Dance

Why do people fall in love with dancing? It's about so much more than mastering fancy footwork:

Self-Expression: Dance is a language of the soul, letting you express feelings for which you might not have words. Movement becomes your creative outlet—and there's no "right" or "wrong" way to feel a song. As one famous choreographer put it, "Dance is for everybody... it came from the people and should always be delivered back to the people." Your unique voice belongs on the dance floor.

Confidence: Stepping on stage (or even just dancing in front of your class) boosts your self-esteem. Every time you nail a move or complete a performance, you prove to yourself "I can do this!" A UCLA study found 98% of people reported dancing improved their mood, with many gaining greater confidence and compassion through dance. The more you dance, the more you believe in yourself.

Physical & Mental Wellness: Dancing improves your cardio health, strength, balance, and flexibility. It's hard to worry about work when you're focused on fun steps and great music! Research shows dance boosts overall psychological well-being, self-esteem, and social skills. Translation: you'll feel happier, sharper, and more alive after a good dance session.

Community & Connection: One of the best parts of dance is the people you meet. Dancing breaks down barriers and forms instant friendships. In our community, you'll find folks cheering you on, partners helping you learn, and a whole group that feels like family. It's common to join nervous and alone, and before you know it, you have a circle of friends who support you on and off the floor.

Personal Growth: Remember the saying "Life begins at the end of your comfort zone"? Dance invites you to gently step beyond that boundary. You learn perseverance, patience, and humility as you improve. Many dancers find that conquering stage fright or mastering a challenging choreography gives them courage to tackle other life challenges.

Cultural Celebration: From Afro-Cuban salsa to classical Indian Bharatanatyam, every performance celebrates heritage and creates opportunities to learn about others. When you dance, you carry forward a legacy that transcends language and background.

Instructor's Corner: Dance is for Everybody

I remember a conversation I had with Rebecca, our lead Bachata instructor and choreographer who has guided many hesitant dancers onto the stage. Here's her insight (not exact quote - from memory):

"In my 10+ years of teaching, I've seen dance transform people from all walks of life. Shy accountants, busy parents, retired grandparents—they all blossomed once they gave it a chance. On the dance floor, labels melt away. It doesn't matter if you're a man or woman, young or older. What matters is the joy you bring.

I always say: if you have a heartbeat, you have rhythm—and you belong here. That spark in dancers' eyes when they finish a performance is priceless. So if you're nervous, it's OK! We'll take it step by step. The community has your back, and we'll be cheering as you discover that yes, you can dance."

Your Turn: A Little Dance Challenge

Now it's your time to shine! This week, we have a fun challenge to get you moving:

  1. Pick a favorite feel-good song – one that makes you want to move. (Need a suggestion? Try "I Wanna Dance with Somebody" by Whitney Houston!)

  2. Dance like no one's watching for one whole song. Shut your door, crank up the volume, and go for it! Wiggle, shake, sway—anything goes.

  3. Reflect & Share: After dancing, notice how you feel. Happier? More energized? Relaxed? If you're up for it, share your experience or go-to dance song with us by replying to this email or commenting on our social media. We might even add your song to our community playlist!

We hope this little dance dare brings a smile to your face. Remember, every dancer started with a single step—or in this case, a kitchen dance party!

Final Thoughts

Thank you for being part of our dance family. We hope this newsletter sparks courage and excitement in you. Remember, dance isn't about being "good enough"—it's about joy, self-expression, and growth. Every time you sway to a beat or take that step on stage, you're celebrating what it means to be fully alive.

Until next time, keep moving to the music of life. Your inner dancer is waiting—and we can't wait to cheer you on!

Happy dancing,

The Flying Dance Community Team 💃🕺

P.S. Ever wondered how dance can improve your mood on a rough day? Stay tuned for next month's newsletter, where we'll explore the powerful link between dance and happiness (with tips for dancing through stress). Until then, remember—you don't have to be a pro to enjoy the show. See you on the dance floor! 💖

Tip: Next time you dance, take a moment to breathe, let go of self-consciousness and surrender to the music. That’s when the magic starts happening
