DANCE IN THE HEAT
Why I Love It
I don’t know why, but I always love dancing in hot weather. You sweat a lot, like really a lot, every person you say hi to and hug is wet with sweat. At the studio on FNSF, even though we have our air conditioners at full blast, the air is usually thick, hot and steamy. But for some reason, there is this an energy in the dances that is indescribable, weaving through the dance floor.
I decided to do a little research to find out why, other than the obvious, why did I enjoy dancing in a hot studio. This is what I found out;
• My flexibility and mobility are enhanced. I did not know that warmer temperatures naturally loosen muscles and joints, reducing stiffness. This allows for smoother, more fluid dance moves with my partners with reduced the risk of injury - (Cool!)
• Everyone knows this one - you get a cardiovascular workout. I have a bad knee, so I don’t run, but I can dance for hours. Should I host a dance marathon? Maybe? lol
• A good night of dance sweating is good for detoxification. I had never thought to compare the rejuvenated feeling I get after dancing had the same the effects of going to a sauna - and shower when you get home.
• This was new to me, dancing in the heat heightens sensory awareness. What is interesting is that I become more aware of my movements, their flow, as we connect with the music. This deepens the emotional and physical engagement with the dance, becoming one with the music.
• Heat can lead to increased endorphin release, promoting feelings of happiness and well-being. This natural high enhances the joy of dancing and leaves a lasting positive impact. This is why we are always smiling.
• Lastly, the heat promotes more intense muscle engagement and contraction, which can aid in toning and defining muscles. This can lead to improved strength and aesthetic appearance.

Tips for Salsa Dancing
1. Hydrate, Hydrate, Hydrate. Please begin hydrating well before coming out Salsa dancing with us. Take frequent water breaks. Electrolyte-rich beverages, such as coconut water or sports drinks, can also help replenish lost minerals and keep your energy levels stable.
2. Tight attire can make a significant difference. Please choose lightweight, breathable fabrics like cotton or moisture-wicking materials that allow sweat to evaporate quickly.
3. Always listen to your body. Heat can intensify the physical exertion of dancing, making it crucial to tune in to your body’s signals. If you start feeling dizzy, excessively sweaty, or overly tired, take a break.
4. Don’t feel obligated to keep dancing non-stop. Take Frequent Breaks, it is ok to say no to a dance. It’s also a great opportunity to socialize.
5. Eating light and healthy meals before dancing can help maintain your energy levels. Choose fruits, salads, or whole grains that provide sustained energy without weighing you down.
6. Embrace the Experience. Dancing in the heat can be a unique experience that adds to the thrill of Salsa. Embrace it with a positive attitude and focus on the joy of dancing. Remember, staying safe and comfortable is key to enjoying the vibrant, passionate rhythms of Salsa, even on the hottest days.
