As I was preparing to share about our exciting fall dance program, I had a certain deja vu feeling that I had planned for similar classes before. I looked back at our past schedules over the last 10 plus years, and discovered that the last time the Flying Dance Community (we were known then as the Flying Dance Company), offered offered a full Salsa, Bachata and Ballroom dance program was in 2008.

We were in our previous dance space on 199 Victoria Road, where we danced in two big rooms, each 2,000 sq feet each, and lots of parking outside (not the case now being in the downtown core of Guelph). Our offerings then are very similar to now, though with just a few differences. Can you notice them?

Along the way, I made some changes:
- improved on our Salsa and Bachata progressive dance program
- introduced West Coast Swing - one of my favorite dance styles
- dropped the kid’s classes
- increased my collaboration and partnerships with talented dance instructors, thus creating an amazing dance program.
- increased the opportunities for our students to connect with new and old friends, practice their dance moves, and continuously enjoy the benefits of being part of an ever-growing, thriving, and dynamic dance community.

One of the primary changes that needed to happen was on a personal level. I needed to accept that I could not do everything myself regardless of how hard I tried. I enjoy meeting new people, teaching, and developing friendships with my students, but like everyone else, I only have 24 hours to my day.

In 2018, I read the book “Work the System”, by Sam Carpenter. It helped me develop a Salsa dance program (and eventually a Bachata dance program) whereby within a year’s dance training in Salsa and Bachata, we can train new students to comfortably begin a career in teaching the beginner level dance steps in those dance styles. I will share more about our Instructor dance training at a later date.
