I teach both the lead and follow dance steps in several different partner dance styles. I can break down their steps to their granular level, describing where your weight should be as you flow through the dance floor. But there is one thing I know I could never pull off, looking like a ‘professional Latin female dancer.’

In my first 2 to 3 years as an instructor, someone new to our community commented that one of my first long-term female students at the time looked like me when she added styling to her dancing. Well, I did not like that comment, and I felt I had not done my job right. I went ahead and tried to prove them wrong, and a few years later, choreographed a ladies styling performance class with the help of my dance partner at that time, Melissa. How do you think we did?

Over the past year, I have had the honour of watching Rebecca May, our Bachata instructor mold our current female dancers into beautiful performers. What surprised me was not Rebecca’s talent as an instructor and a choreographer, no. What blew my mine was how these ladies stepped up to the plate and pulled off a remarkable routine in less than 8 weeks of practice. I was very impressed.
