Not too long ago (well, this was pre-FDComm), I was asked to teach, and DJ at the HOT HOT HOT Latin Fiesta Fundraiser hosted by the Guelph Dance Festival (then known as Guelph Contemporary Dance Festival - GCDF). I had been running the E-Bar Latin Fiesta’s for more than one year, and I had a small following of dancers who could actually dance. But not enough dancers to fill a dance floor.
The Kitchener/Waterloo (K/W) Salsa community had been running for a few months, so I reached out to them in the hopes they would drive to Guelph and dance Salsa with us. They said Yes! I was surprised, and thankful. The K/W Salsa community danced at a club called “The Flying Dog” which hosted Latin Nights on Thursday evenings.
(No, our studio name, ‘Flying Dance’ did not originate from that club, even though I spent many, many, many, Thursday nights dancing there).
The GCDF fundraiser was in January (hence the ‘hot hot hot’ name - very original, lol). By then, I had been living in Canada for more than 10 years, and the winters were actually cold, and lasted until May. That evening was the first time our relatively new Guelph Salsa dance community, and the K/W Salsa dance community met and danced together in a social setting. It set up a friendship that has lasted over 20 years. It was a successful evening even though from the video above, very few people knew how to dance Salsa at that time. Not so anymore….
This Saturday, June 1st, the Guelph Dance Festival has invited us to teach a Salsa class for them for their 26th Annual event. I will be joined by my long time friends Dj Gury Gury and Dj Tarek playing world renowned Salsa music.
