I wanted to thank everyone who attended our FNSF Anniversary this past Friday. We all had a great time, and it really nice seeing some long time dance friends, holding a nice smile as they climb up the 37 steps up to the studio. Thank you to the instructors and volunteers for helping with the celebrations.

So I had this bright idea of taking the kids to work to celebrate this milestone with me. I got emotional as I planned it with my partner Jen. What I had in mind was our regular smooth running Friday Night Salsa Fix (FNSF) event, with some extra doses of fun from three my favorite people, my family.

A little bit of a back story. My kiddo’s go to bed between 7:00 pm and 9:00 pm. I also share the dance studio with them when classes are not running, and they love it. They get to run around anywhere, and everywhere. They use the space to its maximum; playing soccer, rolling on the floor, learning to ride their bikes or scooters, grabbing everything.

Since this dance adventure was going to be taking place around bed time, we had to have the kids fed and cleaned up and ready by 7:30 pm. With the help of a dear ‘dance’ friend, we arrived in the studio just before 8:00 pm. The kids were excited to go to their favorite place. The studio was buzzing with people coming to enjoy an evening of dance after a long week. After running around for a couple of minutes, we settled down to teach our students.

But the kids had something else in mind. They wanted to show their mama all the fun things they get to do at the studio, but soon realized that we wanted them to sit quietly and watch, or participate without running around the studio.

Well, that did not sound fun, standing around, listening, and learning how to dance methodically. My two year old let us know he was not happy, my 7 year old lay down next to my friend and started falling asleep.

It then dawned on me, I don’t have a regular 9-5 job. I work in the evenings, and that is why I had never taken my kids to work was because of just that, it’s their bed time, and they will get cranky if they don’t get what they want.

Lesson learnt. Thank you Jen for trying out this experiment with me, and for the wonderful community who were patient listening to a crying kid while taking a sensual Bachata lesson - kinda hard pulling that off.

Well, at least there is one event I can take my kids to that will not interfere with their regular schedule, FDFest 2024. It runs from 2:00 pm to 9:00 pm, and I will have plenty of time to share our dance community with my family.
